PRODUCTION CONCEPT
After reading and better understanding the play, we found out what a tragedy Hamlet truly is. So we decided that we should take our production in a darker way with: set design, music, lighting, costumes, etc. The production concept is steampunk. Steampunk is explained by Dictionary.com as “a subgenre of science fiction and fantasy featuring advanced machines and other technology based on steam power of the 19th century and taking place in a recognizable historical period or a fantasy world”. This theme of steampunk represents the darkness that builds up drastically in our main character Hamlet. This theme gives the director the liberty to modernize the 18th century play so it can relate to 21st century audience. It gives the Shakespearean classic a new and modern twist but still maintains the old english vibe.
